ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Thank you for your interest in the Medicos de El Centro Family Medicine Residency!

To be eligible for a training position at the New Mexico Primary Care Training Consortium (Medicos de El Centro) Family Medicine Residency Program all physicians must meet the following criteria:

  1. Your application must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS).
  2. Be a graduate of an LCME-accredited medical school in the United States or Canada or an AOA accredited osteopathic school in the United States;
  3. The Medical School that the Physician has graduated from must appear on the list of medical schools recognized as “approved” by the Medical Board of California;
  4. Graduates of international medical schools must hold a currently valid ECFMG certificate or possess a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of New Mexico.
  5. Physicians who are not U.S. citizens must have a valid work authorization. MDEC does not sponsor visas. Eligibility for training at MDEC does not guarantee future eligibility for granting of an unrestricted professional license by the New Mexico Medical Board. 
  6. Physicians must be eligible for employment as verified by the US Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) and the Government Services Administration (GSA). Individuals on the OIC/GSA Exclusion List will not be considered for hire.
  7. Physicians must take and pass Step 1 and Step II of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or COMLEX before beginning residency at the MDEC and Step III must be successfully completed by the end of the second year of training (PGY2) or within 7 years of the first passing score on any USMLE/COMLEX step (whichever is sooner) in order to be considered for PGY3 positions. Physicians must successfully complete a combination examination or the USMLE within seven years from the date any part of the combination examination was first passed.
  8. Physicians must be eligible to receive a New Mexico Training License with the expectation that all requirements of the New Mexico Practice Act related to professional behavior, care of patients, and assurance of competency are adhered to while in training.
  9. Successful clearance of a Background Check, including fingerprints; and
  10. Successful clearance of a drug screen.

Interviews

We are excited to announce that interviews will be held remotely, from October 2023 to January 2024. Additionally, candidates selected for a second look will have the opportunity to participate in an in-person visit. We look forward to meeting our potential future Medicos de El Centro residents!

Application Requirements

A complete application file must include:
  1. Completed ERAS Application
  2. Medical School Transcript indicating medical school graduation within 5 years
  3. Medical School Administrator’s letter of support
  4. Passing scores on USMLE 1, 2, 2CS, or COMLEX exams by second attempt
  5. At least 3 recommendation letters from faculty supervisors
  6. Personal Statement
  7. Interview

Additional Application Requirements for International Medical Graduates

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING BEFORE APPLYING:
  • We cannot sponsor Visas at this time
  • Applicants are not restricted based on their graduation date; however, they must have passed the USMLE tests no more than 7 years prior to applying
  1. Valid ECFMG Certificate (continued below)
  2. Minimum of 6 months of prior U.S. or equivalent clinical experience with significant patient care responsibility to include:
    • Direct patient contact
    • History taking
    • Physical examinations
    • Development of differential diagnoses
    • Identification of relevant clinical findings
    • Problem assessments
    • Formulation of management plans
